Plaque is a sticky substance that contains bacteria and adheres to the structure. When it hardens, it becomes calculus, which can irritate the tissues of your mouth cause periodontal (gum) disease. Gingivitis is the earliest stage of gum disease and is characterized by bleeding gums.
Scaling and root planing are common treatments for periodontal disease, which involve removing calculus and plaque from the tooth surface and improving the smoothness of the root surface. Follow-up visits are necessary to prevent the disease progression and maintain the present bone height around the teeth.
